Tri-County Conewago Creek Association Cleans Up Stream Editor’s Note: Photos of stream clean-up are available via print or email. CONEWAGO CREEK AREA (EAST SHORE) – In an effort to make a positive difference on the Conewago Creek, the Tri-County Conewago Creek Association (TCCCA) held a “Stream Clean Up” on Saturday, May 11th. The group cleaned up approximately a mile of stream in Conewago Township, Dauphin County. Dozens of bags of trash were collected and many large pieces of junk were pulled out of the stream. Items included lawnmowers, tires, the seat out of a car, and an air conditioning unit. Conewago Township arranged to pick up the trash and haul it away. “It was a very productive morning of work,” said Matt Royer, president of TCCCA. “The amount of junk pulled out of the stream was beyond what any of us thought we would find. It was very satisfying for all of the volunteers to accomplish something so visibly positive for the environment. At the same time, we can’t help be feel disgusted that some people can be so inconsiderate of their local woodlands and streams.” TCCCA is a nonprofit volunteer organization committed to monitoring, preserving, enhancing and promoting the Conewago Creek Watershed through education, community involvement and watershed improvement projects. All members of the public are invited to attend TCCCA’s monthly meetings and participate in its programs and activities. The next event sponsored by the group will be a morning “Birdwatching Hike of the Conewago” set for Saturday, June 1, at 8:00 a.m. Participants should bring binoculars and meet at the new entrance to the Lebanon Valley Rails to Trails in Colebrook (the parking lot near the Twin Kiss). The hike is open to all members of the public, and first time birdwatchers are encouraged to attend. The hike will be led by Warwick High School science instructor and experienced birder Tom McKinne. A butterfly expert will help lead the hike as well. The next monthly meeting of TCCCA is Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at the Lawn Fire Company Building, on Route 241 (Mt. Gretna Road) in the village of Lawn. The May 29th meeting will feature guest speaker Dale Bentz from Gleim Environmental in Carlisle presenting “What watershed groups need to know before conducting a stream restoration project.” # # # |
