Watershed Assessment and Restoration Plan
In 2003, TCCCA received a $75,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency Section 319 Program to conduct a comprehensive watershed assessment and restoration plan for the Conewago Creek Watershed. TCCCA has retained RETTEW Associates of Lancaster to conduct the project.  When finished, it will be the most complete and comprehensive study of the Conewago to date.

Stream Monitoring

Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program
In October 2004, TCCCA kicked of its volunteer stream monitoring program.  In partnership with Elizabethtown College and the County Conservation Districts, TCCCA has established six monitoring points on the main stem Conewago.  Each point will be monitored twice a year (spring and fall).

Riparian Buffer Plantings

Riparian Planting Project, Fall 2004
In October 2004, TCCCA participated in a riparian planting project with landowners along Brills Run in Conewago Township, Dauphin County.

Stoffel Property Riparian Planting Project, Spring 2003
In Spring of 2003, TCCCA participated in its first riparian buffer planting project. Bill and Carol Stoffel own property in South Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, through which the Conewago Creek flows. The historic problem with the Stoffels’ creek front property was that it was choked with multi-flora rose, which prevented a diverse, mature forested area from developing. By the summer of 2002, Bill had had enough, and cleared one side of the creek of all multi-flora and other existing vegetation. Bill wanted to replant the area with other kinds of vegetation, and came to TCCCA for help.

Native Grass Seed Harvest, October 2002
One of TCCCA’s main objectives is to increase the amount of native riparian buffer areas along the Conewago and its tributaries. The Milton Hershey School Environmental Education Center, a key partner in TCCCA’s efforts, has planted many riparian buffers along the streams ...

Nature Hikes

Birdwatching Hike of the Conewago, June 1, 2002
On June 1, 2002, TCCCA sponsored a morning birdwatching hike of the Conewago. This hike was led by experienced birder Tom McKinne. Merv Wranger, a butterfly expert, was also present to help identify butterflies.  Twenty-six people attended the hike ...

Cleanups

Stream Cleanup, May 13, 2002
Thirteen TCCCA volunteers spent a sunny May morning cleaning up over a mile of stream and roadways in Conewago Township, Dauphin County. Two areas of the Conewago were targeted.

Outreach/Education

Development and Distribution of Educational Brochures
Funded by a grant from the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania’s Citizen Education Fund, which is being administered by our sponsor, Lancaster County Conservation District, TCCCA developed two educational brochures for distribution to residents of the Watershed.

Lebanon Valley Rails-to-Trail Opening Ceremony, October 26, 2002
On the morning of October 26, 2002, a new four-mile stretch of the Lebanon Valley Rails-to-Trail was dedicated in a ceremony at the Lawn Fire Company Building. TCCCA was invited to set up a display at the ceremony.
