Stream Cleanup, May 13, 2002
Thirteen TCCCA volunteers spent a sunny May morning cleaning up over a
mile of stream and roadways in Conewago Township, Dauphin County. Two
areas of the Conewago were targeted. The first was the bridge on Old
Hershey Road near Beverly Road. Trash was removed from the streambed and
the banks. The largest item removed was a backseat from an old car.
Workers continued to pick up trash along Old Hershey Road, Hill Road and
Mill Road on the way to the second area of the stream, Aberdeen Mills.
TCCCA volunteers began this portion of the clean up in the boulder area on
the Miller property, and worked downstream to a large stream bank dump
along Hertzler Road.
The amount of junk pulled out of the stream at this latter location was
astounding. Many large items were hauled to the bank, including
lawnmowers, tires, water heater tanks, trampolines, and air conditioning
units. Conewago Township arranged to pick up the trash and haul it away.
It was a very productive morning of work. The clean up efforts resulted in
improving an area on the Conewago that has been an eyesore for years,
despite the “No Dumping” sign displayed prominently on the bank. While the
volunteers found it very satisfying to accomplish something so visibly
positive for the environment, they nonetheless felt disgusted that some
people are so inconsiderate of the environment in which we all live.
Only a week after the clean up, in what can only be characterized as an
act of ignorant defiance, TCCCA members noticed that an old refrigerator
had been thrown at the dump site. TCCCA volunteers later returned to
inspect the site and did not see any sign of the fridge. We thank whoever
arranged to haul it away. Fortunately, there has been little sign of
further dumping at this particular spot on the Conewago. Let’s hope it
remains that way!
