Hanson Farm Live Staking

In March 2013, TCCCA partnered with Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Penn State Extension to harvest and install black willow and silky dogwood live stakes at the Hanson farm in Upper Lawn.  Live stakes are live cuttings taken from dormant trees and shrubs that grow well in wet soils.  Volunteers installed several hundred live stakes into the stream banks on the Little Conewago Creek, which flows through the Hanson farm.

The Hansons have installed stream bank fencing, crossings, and riparian buffers at the farm under the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program.  All of the conservation practices at the Hanson farm help to restore the Conewago Creek watershed.
